Homemade Sugar-Free BBQ Sauce with Jaca

This homemade sugar-free BBQ sauce swaps brown sugar for Jaca allulose, giving you all the sweet, smoky, tangy flavor of classic barbecue sauce with about 1 gram of sugar per serving instead of 15. It simmers up thick and glossy in about 30 minutes and clings to ribs, chicken, and burgers exactly like the real thing.

This is a Jaca-adjusted, healthier version of the classic — we swapped 1 cup of brown sugar for 2 cups of Jaca allulose, cutting the sugar from roughly 15 grams to about 1 gram per serving while keeping every bit of the sweet-and-smoky flavor.

Prep time: 5 minutes  |  Cook time: 25 minutes  |  Total time: 30 minutes  |  Makes: about 2 cups (16 servings)

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups Jaca allulose (replaces 1 cup brown sugar)
  • 1½ cups plain tomato sauce or crushed tomatoes
  • ¼ cup apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon liquid smoke (optional, but recommended)
  • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper

Instructions:

  1. Combine the Jaca allulose, tomato sauce, apple cider vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, liquid smoke, smoked paprika, salt, and black pepper in a medium saucepan and whisk until smooth.
  2. Bring to a gentle simmer over medium-high heat, stirring often.
  3. Reduce to medium heat and simmer, stirring occasionally, for 20 to 30 minutes, until the sauce has thickened and coats the back of a spoon. Jaca allulose dissolves completely and gives the sauce a glossy, sticky finish just like brown sugar.
  4. Remove from heat and let cool to room temperature, or brush it on warm while grilling.
  5. Store in a sealed glass jar in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.

Why Jaca? Jaca is pure allulose — a rare sugar that tastes and caramelizes like sugar but has almost no calories and doesn’t spike blood sugar. Using it here turns a sugar-loaded pantry staple into a barbecue sauce you can pour on freely.
