These sloppy joes swap brown sugar for Jaca allulose to deliver the same sweet, tangy, saucy ground-beef filling you grew up with—while cutting the sugar down to about a third of a traditional sloppy joe. It's a weeknight-fast, family-friendly dinner that comes together in one skillet in about 30 minutes.
This is a Jaca-adjusted, healthier version of the classic: we replaced the brown sugar with Jaca allulose at 2× the amount and used no-sugar-added ketchup, so every sweet-and-tangy bite keeps the nostalgia and loses most of the sugar. Allulose is a rare sugar that tastes like the real thing but doesn't spike your blood sugar.
Ingredients:
- 1 lb (450 g) lean ground beef (90/10)
- 1 small yellow onion, finely diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- ¾ cup no-sugar-added ketchup
- 2 tablespoons Jaca allulose (replaces 1 tablespoon brown sugar — 2× the amount)
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
- 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
- ½ teaspoon fine sea salt
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
- ½ cup water (to reach the perfect saucy consistency)
- 4 hamburger buns, toasted
Instructions:
- Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef, onion, and garlic. Cook, breaking up the meat, until the beef is browned and the onion is soft, 6–8 minutes. Drain off the excess grease.
- In a bowl or measuring cup, whisk together the no-sugar-added ketchup, Jaca allulose, Worcestershire sauce, apple cider vinegar, mustard, salt, pepper, and water.
- Pour the sauce into the skillet and stir to coat the beef. Reduce the heat to low and simmer uncovered for 10–15 minutes, stirring now and then, until the mixture is glossy, rich, and spoonable—not runny, not dry.
- Taste and adjust: a splash more vinegar for tang, a little more Jaca allulose for sweetness. Spoon the warm filling onto the toasted buns and serve right away.
Prep time: 10 minutes | Cook time: 20 minutes | Total: 30 minutes | Servings: 4 sandwiches
Tip: pile on melty cheese, dill pickles, or a scoop of coleslaw. Leftover filling keeps in the fridge 3–4 days and reheats beautifully with a splash of water.
